Our Geechee Dad Turns 70

moving to North Carolina in a couple weeks we hope to keep
this blog fresh with lots of good stuff.
This is our Dad who just turned 70. He is a true Geechee Boi
from the Low Country. He celebrated his birthday with family
and friends and even his high school music teacher!!!

Tuesday: Revenue Day!

Tuesday just seems to naturally flow to the discussion of revenue. If you have it, the question is how to make it flow to where it needs to go and if you don't have it, how to position yourself to receive and direct it to where it needs to go. Though cash may be considered king by some, don't limit your revenue streams to"Cash Only" Revenue (wealth and riches) goes so much deeper and wider than that. Broaden your perspective. View wealth as the creativity to make riches and view riches as people, places AND things.

Sunday: Replace and Restore Day. First, everything, no matter what it is must have its proper place in your life. Some times the result of weekend resting and mediating often leave our personal spaces looking very lived in. Being mindful to replace and restore allows us to welcome the week with a clean slate ready to ponder the weekly vision for our lives and achieve the goals that come along with it.

Monday: Vision Day. Each of us should have a vision for our lives. Be it as big as launching a new life endeavor or the weekly cleaning out of your car. Monday is a great day to decide what will get your time and talent. Find some time to sit and ponder in your restored space. Letting your powerful mind do its thing. You'll be surprised what it will trigger that really needs your attention.

SELF: I am looking forward to becoming a better me day by day, with a little help from my friends and a whole heap of help from my heavenly father.

REVENUE STREAMS: I got a lot of opportunities before me, the question is which stream to jump in fully and let it take me to the people, places and things that will amount to the best opportunities.

RELATIONSHIPS: This week I will endeavor to strengthen the ropes of my relationship with my boo (husband), my seeds (kids)and the incredible community I call family and friends. All that we do is based on relationships. May we all learn that lesson quickly and enjoy the rewards of building incredible communities.

VISION: Without one the people perish. How can you move forward without knowing where you want to go? It is most important that you become the best visionary for your life and its direction. A life with no vision is like a trip with no destination or map.

PERSONAL SPACES: I love Mediterranean homes! I will one day own a 12,000 square foot one with all the trimmings. It will be well appointed and reflective of who I am and those I love. There will be Geechee artwork, folklore, music and food all around. It will all demonstrate the incredible love I have received and that I now desire to give.

Monday is Vision Day

Today on Vision Day a.k.a. Monday we encourage you to ponder your gifts, talents and abilities in a way that speaks to your future endeavors. Start small or go as big as your imagination can take you. Your visionary thoughts for today may only encompass what you want to accomplish by the end of the week and that is good or it they may take you to a place and time in the future wherein you are doing the things that you since God's pleasure on as you do them. You know, the things that make you smile and work your hardest with ease and the joy in knowing that if I never make money from doing this, it will be deemed the hardest work I ever loved.

Of late our visionary thoughts are so vast and varied that we have taken to writing dreamscripts. In them we converse as if we have already accomplished our goals. We speak of the activities, joys, and responsibilities that are birthed out of the manifested expression of our visions. It is one of the most rewarding elements of Vision Day.

Sending your way heaps of mental and emotional health. The kind that equips you to make right decisions and love your yes and your no even when others don't. This healthy posture will result in teaching others how to interact with you in way that shows healthy regard for you and them. Have day filled with futuristic thoughts of a you doing what you love to do and making a phenomenal difference!

Barnes & Noble Featuring Vanessa Brantley Newton

Hi All, Attached are photos of the Livingston Mall Barnes & Noble Teacher's Appreciation Reception that Vanessa presented at on April 15th. Vanessa was one of two presenters. She spoke first about the impact her teachers had on her and she then shared about being a children's book illustrator, Let Freedom Sing and the awesome opportunity afforded her by Blue Apple Books. Needless to say, after her 17 minute presentation the author's table where she was sitting was rushed by teachers anxious to meet her, purchase the book and book her to speak at their schools.
Deirdra, The host and Communication Specialist for the Livingston Barnes & Noble store, announced shortly thereafter that all the copies of Let Freedom Sing had sold out! Yippee!!! All in all we meet some great educators and the second speaker Cynthia Willis www.cynthiawillis.com was awesome. She is a published children's book author who formerly worked as a text book editor at Scholastic. Have a great day and enjoy the photos.

Music to Live by...Donald Lawrence

Morntink everyone!

Just a few days ago while hanging with V, she shared a copy of her latest top tracks to live by. The 1st track with Donald Lawrence's Back II Eden from The Law of Confession, Part I. After having Track No. 1 on repeat for an afternoon, the next day I went out and purchased a copy so I could hear the rest. The CD is awesome and was inspired by a teaching from Dr. Bill Winston on The Law of Confession. He also has a book coming soon. I love all music, but the style and chords of my Pentecostal upbringing are traditional and contemporary gospel. I have longed to hear lyrics and melodies that chant the principles of God and Trumpets his Word. In this CD I have found it. To many times the fabulous hooks and vamps we chant are stepped in negative words describing how we long for and are waiting for our heavenly Father to show up in our circumstances.

Donald Lawrence has truly captured the essence of powerful call and response gospel music that can release a spirit of joy and exuberant expectation! I don't purchase much music as when I find something that works I play it forever and ever. This is the album for me and I encourage you to get it and enjoy it as well. It is the daily lyrical and musical vitamin we all need or just the right spoon-full-of-sugar to help the medicine of life go down!

Celebrating the 4th!

Hey yawl!

I hope your 4th of July was just as great as ours. V and her crew (boo and baby girl) and I and mine (boo and baby boy and baby girl) sat on the deck at my house and had burgers, dogs, Crochets potato salad, hmmm good and V made smores with the kids.

We also listened to all MJ's greatest hits known and unknown. V's boo downloaded a bunch of stuff and we had a great time reflecting on the King of Pop! He truly was awesome and worthy of recognition and sincere celebration. I think we listened to Heart Break Hotel at least 10 times! Here's to good times and freedom!

How Una Doing? Missed you guys something fierce. First and foremost please accept my apologizes for not keeping in touch. The last several months have been filled with ins, outs, ups and downs, but certainly more ups than down and more ins than outs!

BTW, let me say hats off to all those who keep their blogs current and up to date no matter what the weather. You are an inspiration to me! Kudos to my big Sis Vanessa Brantley Newton. She consistently connects with her blog community and it continues to grow so nicely.

Okay, remember the 2Geechee Girls started this blog to share with you the things that we love to do hoping it would encourage, uplift and be fun. Well get out your noise makers it is time to celebrate!

About a year ago I began a children's album entitled Neo Soul Rhymes Vol. 1 a remake of classic nursery rhymes classic with a neo soul and jazzy twist. Well, the much awaited album will be available on June 25th! It has 8 cuts on it with a few originals that I am sure you will love. In a few days I will send a more detailed notice about the CD and our major event coming up on July 18th.

Vanessa also has some fantastic news! V's first hard cover children's book will be available in stores September 2009! The book is entitled Let Freedom Sing and is published by Blue Apple Books! It is a 32 page full color picture book that depicts pivotal and commemorative moments during the civil rights movement. I believe it is some of her best work ever!

I am so very, very proud of she and I am in awe of her endless flow of creativity. May your streams never be blocked. Look for a "Proud Sistah Strikes Again" entry real soon and more details outlining the up coming launch of Neo Soul Rhymes Volume 1 and Let Freedom Sing!

HER Ministries Back to Basics "The Prayer Clinic"

Hi All,

Yesterday HER Ministries (Healing Every Realm) hosted one of the most impacting monthly meetings I have ever had the privilege of attending. It was held at the beautiful and historic Montclair Women's Club in Montclair, NJ. The event started off with the usual excellence of the ministry hosts founder, Evangelist Dean Porterfield and her daughter, co-host Minister Tennille Miller.

As we completed registration we received a program snuggled inside a beautiful gifted copy of the Prayer of Jabez, so from the door to the well appointed continental breakfast and their ability to host you in such a warm and inviting way, HER was pouring love into us and creating an atmosphere for experiencing something great.

After dining we moved into our seats to begin the meeting. I had the awesome opportunity to lead praise worship. Vanessa was unable to attend so I was blessed to have the help and support of the gifted and willing in the form of pianist Denzel Cohen along with praise and worship leaders Keisha Reynolds and Khalif Miller.

Leading the attendees of HER is always a blessing, because they come filled with anticipation. Also it is like coming home for me since about 50% of the supporters are family and friends I have known since I was a child. Therefore that love and support is always in the room and there is nothing quite as inviting and warming to the heart as looking into the faces of those that love you, support you and are just proud of you.

At the conclusion of worship Evangelist Dean came up to introduce the speaker of the hour and the entire room just erupted into an elongated moment of praise and declaration unto the Lord. It was a beautiful sustaining moment in His presence.

Then came the main course and dessert! In the form of one of the most dynamic preaching/teaching, practical sessions on prayer I have ever been in, and I have been in many. The Rev. Lula A. Baker of New Hope Baptist Church, Newark, NJ was a breathe of fresh air you just wanted to keep inhaling for hours!

Rev. Baker started the session with foundational scripture references and sharing the stories of biblical characters and their journeys in pray along with the great results. She then began to break it down even more sharing revelatory insights and nuggets of truth. Rev. Baker has the uncanny ability to unwrap the ageless principles and ways of God from around the historical figures and then rewrap them around modern scenarios you quickly identify and grasp. Her sharing that way made her points so intensely powerful, that with each aha moment and reference it took everything you had to stay in your seat taking notes and not just stand in agreement shouting amen the entire time.

It is said, the highest form of communication is story telling and that Christ was the greatest story teller that ever lived. Well Rev. Baker has certainly tapped into that anointing, with her ability to tell a story or a "Modern Day Parable" if you will. I along with many others found ourselves writing pages of notes that I am certain we will reference time and time again. For just a taste of what we dined on ponder these headings and statements of faith she shared.

Pray Purposefully
Plan Prayerfully
Proceed Positively, and
Pursue Persistently

After the session was over there was a line to greet and thank her for sharing. I made my way personally to her as well and with a heart filled with gratitude I thanked her for the timely teaching.

In the tradition of HER attendees we all hung around and continued to snack and chat about the meeting. Everyone I came in contact with was greatly impacted by the session and is looking forward to praying with knowledge and insight.

Kudos to HER for hearing the heart of God for such a time as this and hosting this much needed Back to Basics "Prayer Clinic."

Una have a Geecheelcious Valetine Day!

Hi All,

It's been a minute since our last entry, but for good reason. We have been busy being wives, mothers and sister-girl-friends. On top of all of that we have been planning something special for the spring as well, but more about that later.

Right now we just want to tell you how much we love and appreciate each and everyone of you. The love and support that comes our way is constant and crazy good!

Please know that we see it, hear it, but most of all we feel it. At the most critical and crucial times it comes rushing in and overtakes us like a warm blanket pulled up at the right time in the middle of the night and we just wrap ourselves in it and bask!

Like when our boo's Ray and Will care for our seeds (our kids) helping them with their homework, cooking dinner, washing clothes, running errands, rubbing tired feet, doing hair and painting nails; or

how our visiting god-parents, Bob & Larue Miller come into town for a week and we come in to home cooked meals everyday, love, hugs and watching happy children play Apples to Apples or Rummikub with them for hours; or

when our peeps, like Angel, Pam and Wendy scoop up our kids from school when we can't get their, then take them home feed them a snack and start that homework, priceless...but wait there's more

Like when my crew of friends at work are all willing to cover reception for an hour each day so I can rush home to be with my kin folk visiting from the low country and eat dinner at a godly hour! Yippee; or

how my follow fine and performing art industry peeps, like Wendy, Anthony, Tonya, Sunny, John, Nate, Khalif, Pamela, Jennifer and Dosia all drop what they are doing to help each other make the most of an awesome opportunity!, but wait there's more.....

Like how folks are still celebrating my birthday with lunches, dinners, and drive-bys at home filled with hugs and kisses and continued birthday wishes.

Here's hoping we do the same for you. Have a wonderifical Valentine's Day and more than getting love, give love in a big way now and forever. It really does conquer all!

Geechee Greetings,

For my birthday my Big sister V is going to do a black and white portrait of me from a recent photo. I would like your help in deciding which photo to use.

Most recently I purchased a table top book entitled Jacqueline Kennedy The White House Years. It depicts the oh so fabulous fashions she wore from 1961 - 1963 and all the marvelous additions and renovations she conducted while in residence. In the beginning pages is a timeless charcol illustration of her by Rene Bouche. It is her pre-inaugural portait and it was featured in Vogue 1961. When I saw it I knew then that I desiring a good thing, having an illustration done of me during this very eventful era of my life.

Hey Yawl, January 2nd was my B-Day and it was awesome! I learned from a wise woman that past a certain age B-Day's should be celebrated broader and longer. I wholeheartedly agree! Just like a fine wine with age we only get better. Rare, highly valued, sought after and only brought out to serve the best. Like a true treasure, when you pop our cork, just let us sit for a moment and breathe, then drink deep and enjoy! See! Now I bet you can hardly wait to celebrate your coming BDays with a little more longevity.

I believe one of the greatest gifts is listening. After that displaying the fact that you have heard via thoughtful and tangible PDA’s Public displays of affection or acts. For example this year I received some of the most remarkable B-Day gifts. Not that I am so hard to please, but in the last few years or so I've been on a journey to discover myself, cause not really knowing what you like or what you are really into can be a drag and just plan sad. Therefore, having dug deep into myself I've found nuggets of truth that I have come to really value.

On New Year's Eve from my big sis. V I received a big designer bag in my accent color for life, red!! From my boo, I got the DVD series of one of my favorite actors and performers of all time FRED “Freaking” ASTAIRE!!!! I love that dude. He was so suave, cool, elegant and debonair, and most of all his rhythmic delivery while walking, talking, singing, dancing or just snapping his finger and swaggering along were priceless. Another set of sweet moments came with all the FB Face Book love I have received since I wrote on my wall "Coy is loving all the B-Day FB love coming her way, and came my way it did!!!! Thanks everybody.

Some of the most righteous gifts came from a few of my sistahgirlfriends. Like a set of four, white plates with black scroll work. Scroll work is one of my most wonderifically favorite things. My smile was sooooooo big. In my quest to brand 2Geechee Girls in your mind and heart, I said in passing "I would love to have a jumbo clear umbrella with the geechee girl logo on it for my B-Day." along with dinner at my new favorite restaurant.

So what do they do? They punk me and place in a beautiful gift bag all wrapped in tissue a .99 cent umbrella that they attempted to replicate the Geechee Girl logo on. Lame, uh? It sure was, but did Geechee Girl Coy know that? Heck no. I started almost screaming in giddy excitement in the middle of restaurant as I pull out the Dollar Store umbrella, unsnapped it and fully extended it as I exclaimed how happy I am and how wonderful this is and they are. Little did I know I was being punked and V was in on it too. As you can see they drew their version of V’s logo, stick figures and all. LOL!

After dinner at another place, and almost at the end of the evening, my girlfriend goes to the car in the cold and brings back the real deal, this incredible thoughtfully appointed basket full of the most fabulous Geechee Girl must haves to inspire me to dream, blog and share it all with you thus, this long entry! Shhhhhhhh, I’m getting better, at least it’s entertaining, right?

In the basket was, of course, a very generous gift certificate to, you guessed it, Cuban Pete’s! the perfect red mug, red designer ink pens, geechee girl folders, a red picture frame, beautifully colored journals and my very own geechee girl hot cup with the logo for my favorite morning libation, hazel nut coffee, light with two Splenda! It is so good to be loved, but even better to be known and celebrated for being you! Enjoying B-Day delights from Winter till Spring!

3 Cheers for the Best Holiday Hosts Ever!

Happy Belated Merry Christmas once again! This year V and our families broke tradition and instead of hosting Christmas dinner we accepted an invitation to dinner with some of our favorite family. Our hosts Khalif and Tennille Miller are some of the best people on earth. From the moment you enter their well appointed spacious home to the first kiss and the last hug goodbye they make you feel as if you are the VIP guests in their home.

The food was fabulous, and as you know already I live with some heavy hitters. Yep you guessed it V brought her famous candided yams and cornbread and Will, my boo, brought the spiral cut ham. All the staples were there including some new ones and absolutely delicious!!!!

One of the best things about my family is that they are certifiably crazy and the fun is fast, furious and riddled with laughter every step of the way. The Millers always have great games and prizes. The last time we were there My husband and I came in 2nd place and V and her husband came in 1st place, so this year we came prepared to win!

Now understand the competition is fierce and since we come from a family of fine and performing artists the creativity is through the roof and always on and popping! This year we played Miller Holiday Trivia with 1-3 point star questions. For a hot minute some of us were in the lead, but in the end it was neck and neck between Tennille's mom Dean and the Family Matriarch Sarah Powell who in the end took the win! However along the way there were some answers to questions and rebuttal comments that made us spit the apple cider right out of our mouths with laughter!

Excuse me as I take a moment to shout out to those whose answers and antics will go down in family fun history. To Shika for Spelling Jesus' name with a G and doing it with conviction, to Patt (with 2 Ts)for everything you said and did, to Lamont for every interjected comment no matter the topic and to Kibwe for the perfect pitch Appollo Siren and the Sandman dance during Pat's performance of her Jingle Bell rewrite. Folks you can only imagine and oh how I wish you were there! If a camera were rolling, we would easily win the award for the funniest home videos and have 2million hits on youtube for sure.

Big Ups to the winners of the Christmas Carole rewrites, 3rd place Will and I, 2nd place Lamont Tennille's Brother, and for the win, Khalif's sister Shirin for her version of Jingle Bells rewritten by V!, but wait there's more...What's the best part, Shirin gave her coveted award to V! See that's what I'm talking about just good times with quality people.

So raise your glasses with me to those who host and do it well. To Tennille, Khalif and all others out their like you, may your homes be blessed with peace and happiness and your problems as an old man's teeth, few and far between!

The One King Wrap Party was excellent! Monty and Daunne Blackmore along with Pat Hodge hosted a fantastic intimate affair at Miele's in Verona, NJ. The food and service were above board. Being with everyone again was just as good or even better than before. We laughed, ate and laughed some more. Just before the end of the evening Monty showed some footage of the production and it was just wonderful. I can't wait to get my DVD! The academy award nominated videographer, Ron Wyatt did some awesome stuff and it wasn't even edited yet! If and when it goes on sale, Hint hint DM Productions, be sure and get yourself a copy! Hello we're back! Thanks for checking in each day. We really appreciate that kind of love and support! We had an excellent time working with the cast and crew of One King. They are Dons and Divas in the very best way possible and in deed some of the best people on earth! Each night of the performance they brought their gifts of administration, orchestration, performing art demonstration, production and direction to the table and let them be used to the glory of God! It was a thing of beauty. Their kinship and artistry was and is a priceless combination.

To those of you who purchased tickets and came out to support, much love is being sent your way. V and I along with the cast and crew hope you can feel it! 2 Geechee Girls Sing! - 2008 DM Productions One King Christmas Concert

Hello there, In case some of you did not know yes the Geechee Girls sing! V and I have been singing since we were toddlers ages 4 and 5. Our singing parents Rev. Coy Brantley and the late, Rev. Shirley Brantley taught us to sing and how to harmonize anything and its been on and popping ever since!

Well it's been three years since we've been involved in a Christmas Concert and many of you have inquired as to when and where you can hear us sing. On December 15th, 16th and 17th we will be principal lead vocalist in the Monty Blackmore Christmas Concert Production of "One King." During the concert Vanessa Newton, my sister, Angel Lite Garrett, our sister-girlfriend and I, Coy Curry will be featured principal vocalists in four of the concert's selections. There will be costume changes, Supreme like dance moves and in one piece the three of us are even singing "The Blues!"

In preparation for the concert we have had an opportunity to work with some crazy talented folks and we want to give them a shout out, right here! Right now.

He has the uncanny ability to make you want to sing. We love that!

Nancey Jackson-Johnson, Vocal Director, singing machine and 09’ Stellar Award Nominee! Go Nancy. Nancey is a sweet heart and vocal power house. We are in awe when we watch her sing. She has an incredibly genuine spirit that shines through in everything she does. Nancey it has been our joy to work with you! Congratulations on the nomination. We hope you win!

Anthony DeWitt, Choreographer and Dancer. Anthony has choregraphed steps for the trio Angel, V and I that are so Divalicious we just want to make him proud by getting them right and doing them justice! Thanks Anthony you make being Fluffy and Fabulous Fun!

Vincent Freeman, Principal Vocalist, friend of Nancy and our new found friend as well. When we first heard Vincent warming up, and just pretending to sing, we all wanted to throw our shoes at him it sounded so fantastic. Vincent has an awesome voice. I tried hard to get a duet with him, but alas it was not to be, Angel gets to sing with him and they sound incredible. Next time Vince, you and me, k?

Pamela Harriot, Principal Vocalist, Educator and First Lady of St. Marks Methodist Church in Montclair, NJ. V and I first sang with Pamela for one of St. Marks’ holiday concerts and we have longed for an opportunity to see her showcased ever since. One King has afforded us the opportunity to hear her excellent opera/classical vocal offerings again! You go girl and when we grew up we want to look just like you!

Judithe Morales, Principal Vocalist and one of the best vocal tip givers we know. Judithe has a rich sound to her voice that is polished and beautiful. Thanks for all the tips Judithe, especially the one about throwing your voice against the wall! We will never forget that one, priceless.

Daunne Blackmore, Principal Vocalist and host extraordinaire. Lady Daunne has a grace and finesse about her that shines though in everything that she does. Her performances and presentations are always enhanced by her outstanding presence and engaging smile. Do your thing Daunne we love you!

True Worship, who are all incredible Principal Vocalists in their own right, are posing as the “Ensemble” for One King, LOL. In the music world, when you meet singers that can just pick up anything, blend it and make it sound beautiful, they are called “Vocal Ringers.” This group is one of the best set of vocal ringers around. Singing with you guys during One King has been a vocal treat. Don’t forget us when you come into your kingdom!

Angel Lite Garrett, Principal Vocalist and our sister-girlfriend for life!!!! V and I have had the pleasure of singing with Angel for over 10 years now and it has been an amazing ride. Angel has graciously showcased and featured us as soloists, songwriters and background vocalist on three of her four recordings, (i.e. Ready to Go Higher, Beautiful River and Journey, the Prelude.) Angel is a singer, songwriter, worship leader, vocal coach and arranger of arrangers. Vanessa Brantley Newton, my Ace Boon Coon, My Twenty Twenty. Singing with V is as natural as eating rice and gravy! If you think she can illustrate, get ready to hold your breath when you hear her sing. She has a contralto voice like my mom that is rich and powerful. She writes lyrics that are out of this world and delivers them with the same signature uniqueness and originality seen in her illustrations. For One King we are singing an original piece, “One Starry Night” that V wrote with some help from Moo Moo Mclendon, Angel and I. She is a vocal powerhouse and when she opens her mouth to sing, you just want to lean forward and take it all in.

As The Trio, Angel, V and I have so enjoyed developing and working on the four pieces we are doing. For The Blues Angel came up with a concept close to the heart of all Americans. Then we all contributed to the lyrical rewrite. It is a piece you simply must experience! There are some vocal acrobats we do that are just off the chain! I’ve been singing with these two for over 10 years now and it only gets better and better. We can be apart doing our own thing for awhile then whammo!!! an opportunity to sing together will present itself and here comes the magic all over again. I just love singing with them. It’s like eating the perfect warmed brownie, topped with soft vanilla ice cream, warm drizzled chocolate syrup and 3 spoons! Need I say more?

Our annual Turkey Day with friends and family is a long standing tradition and as usual it’s going to be a blast! We’ve got some of the best Heavy Weight and Middle Weight Knock-Out-Chefs in our circle of life and we’re sure you do too. As for me, truth be told, I’m no Knock-Out-Chef, but I’m no slouch either. My strengths lie in hosting and providing the basics, such as, décor, drinks, desserts and cranberry sauce in a can. Hey, no laughing. At times I’ve been Pooh-poohed for my love of canned cranberry sauce, but it is a family tradition and I love it! CRANBERRY SAUCE TIP: If you do it just right opening one end fully and then slightly opening the other, bingo it just slides right out of the can onto the dish.

Now here comes the list of the Champion Knock-Out-Chefs in our circle:
In the Heavy Weight category and weighing in with 3 side/main dishes is VANESSA BRANTLEY NEWTON. V’s specialty is anything she sets her hand to make, but the most requested items for family gatherings are: “Candied Yams”, “String Beans with Bacon”, or her special pot of goodness, “Red Rice” and our Momma’s “Pineapple Upside Down Cake” that V has just taken to another level!

Next in the ring is my boo, WILL CURRY a Middle Weight Knock-Out-Chef bringing a main and a side: His delicious "Yellow Cake with Chocolate Icing", that (sometimes costly but oh so delicious) Costco, Kirkland "Spiral cut Ham", and "Pillsbury Crescent Rolls", a dinner staple and must have.

On the other side of the ring is KATYA SCOTT, another Middle Weight Knock-Out-Chef bringing to the table desserts like nobody’s business. She introduced us to two things that she cannot cross the threshold without, that oh-so-delicious "Fruit Tart" and her delicious, somebody stop me before I eat it all "Fabulous Fudge". Next are some honorable mentions that have graced our table at one time or another.

Meet Our Inspiration - The Original Geechee Girl

We greet you in the traditions of our ancestors the Geechee/Gullah people and also in memory of our Mom, Shirley Ann Grant Brantley or “Shirl.” Born in South Carolina, April 9, 1941. She was and is our constant inspiration a true Geechee. So what's a Geechee? We are direct descendants of the Gullah/Geechee people in Beaufort, South Carolina. The slaves brought to that region were West Africans and known for their agricultural expertise in the growing of rice and basket weaving! What makes the West African connection to the Gullah/Geechee people so special, is during the season when the mosquitoes would be so dangerous to the plantation owners, they would abandon their homes leaving the slaves alone to care for the fields of rice. Without supervision these slaves were able to maintain many of their traditions and ways of life and most importantly their dignity and self respect. Our mom was Geechee and proud of it and just like her descendants, she spoke with a distinct dialect and carried herself in a certain way. She was very spiritual, with a quiet pride. She was a rice eater with every meal no matter how many starches were on the table, clean to fault, intelligent and full of life lessons. Many of the things we celebrate and look to share with you were demonstrated in our daily lives by our mom. It was nothing for her to pick up a stray be it human or animal bring them home, clean them up, feed them, encourage them and send them on their way or keep them. She constantly brought diversity into our lives, ultimately teaching us how to make strangers family and a house a home. Long before the media made shows out of home gardening, cooking, arts & crafts, homeopathic treatments and makeovers our mom was already doing it. She was an original Martha Stewart. In an urban city she and my dad already grew vegetables in an asphalt garden. She was an extraordinary cook just ask anybody from South Carolina to New Jersey. She was known for her signature pineapple upside cake, scrubbings and chicken soup. As a trained midwife she could birth babies, make house shoes and bed pans out of paper and seemingly prepare a tasty meal from nothing and feed a family. One of her favorite things to do was make you over from head to toe, starting with your emotions and your insides, then she would bring you into her closet and dress you in additional hair if necessary down to her “pointed-toe, roach-killer” shoes, if you were a size 8 ½ of course. She would cruise her favorite neighborhoods and thrift shops where they knew her by name. She could take an old chair, bed, or sofa, haul it home in her van and make into something beautiful. Long before designers suggested you use sheets for curtains, yep Shirley did that in our room. She knew the art of pampering the mind, body and spirit, with things that fostered creativity. Therefore, her bath time was sacred and her skin was flawless. She had a contralto voice to die for that could soothe any savage beast. In the spring of 2000 our mom, the Rev. Shirley Brantley, wife and friend went home to be with her heavenly father after a fierce fight with colon cancer. We miss her dearly, but she packed us full of all her goodness before she left. Her daily demonstration of life and can do spirit leave us with timeless memories and treasures we want to share with you. Hey ya’ll, it’s day two and once again welcome to 2Geechee girls! We are two sisters born and raised in Northern, NJ the “Garden State”, which we truly love. What's so good about Jersey, you say? Well we’ll tell you.

(1)We have all four seasons,(2)24 hour diners, just about anywhere you can think of, (3)Delicious Jersey tomatoes, (4) Some of the best local, national and international cuisine, (5) We got your pick of where to live, city, suburb, country or even down-the-shore, (6) We are responsible for some of the best fine & performing artist in the business, Count Bassie, Jon Bon Jovi, Carole King, Frank Sinatra, Queen Latifah, Bruce Springsteen, Wyclef Jean and Whitney Houston, to name a few, and(7) depending on where you live, we are just 30 minutes from the Big Apple.

That’s what so good about Jersey. Heck No wonder our taxes are high!

However, let's get back to our introduction. Vanessa or "V" as she is affectionately known is the eldest and I, Coy am the baby that acts older. You know how that goes, right? We are just 15 months apart and up until the ages of 4 and 5 I'm pretty sure everyone thought we were twins, because we were dressed alike quite often by our mom. V is a true Baby Boomer (born 1963) and I am an on the cusp Generation X'er (born 1965.) I get to enjoy the best of both generations, ha!

V and I are sistahs through and through. She is the up to my down, the in to my out and the flip to my flop. We have incredible husbands and fantastic little people we call our seeds. We are about being our best, celebrating our likes and our differences, which ultimately make us who we are. It's been a long time coming but we really love how the cakes of our lives have turned out. They may be a little uneven on one side, and burnt around the edges, but once you cover it with “icing” which is “the love of life”, it's all good!

We have learned some life lessons, gained some nuggets of truth, and found some life principles and laws to live by that have made us better at being who we are and it is our pleasure to share them with you. We think blogging is a great way to express yourself and hopefully our expression will entertain, encourage, enlighten, and most of all empower you to become the best you, you can be!

Well, I'm sure that is enough for now. BTW, did I tell you I'm wordy as heck, hmmm, my bad. No worries though. Entries won't always be this length. We look forward to doing some cool and interesting things with this blog. In a way we hope compels you to respond and share.

In Memory of our Sister and Friend Tahalia Richardson

Welcome to the blog of 2geechee girls.
Where girls come to chat, laugh, shed wisdom and delight. We are launching our first blog entry in memory or our dear sister-friend, Tahali Richardson.

Today is a bittersweet day for us as our sister and friend Tahalia "Hali" Richardson died last night in California. She was only in her 30s.

We say bittersweet because Halia had been sick and just recently had a heart attack that required follow up surgery. She also had lupus and seemed to often be in a fight for her life. Well the fight is over now and she is not in pain anymore. She is in her awesome new body without flaws and sickness. She wouldn't come back here if we wanted her too. For we have hope and this hope is assured to us that if we live right we will see her again. We are still very shocked by it all. In late July, we all spent the day together in Jersey. She had just cut off her beautiful locs of which she had a head full of them. She had also dropped more weight, but in a good way. She was looking fine! We sat together, laughed, watched Meet the Browns, screamed and loved all over each other. Several months before we'd just buried Leah her older sister and now we are memorializing her today. She leaves to mourn, Mama Richardson, her 7 year old son and miracle baby Hebrew and one of her dearest friends Jackki Taylor. She also leaves behind a host of sister-friends who love her and miss her already.

We will never forget her high squeaky voice that made us grin. Her comedic timing that had us rolling and doubled over with tears to boot, her fabulous, fabulous cooking and most of all her spirit and song. Tahalia was a fabulous singer and worship leader.

If you knew her give a shout-out and if you did not thanks for celebrating her life with us today. Mad crazy props to a geecheegirl at heart. Rest in peace Hali. We will miss her dearly.
